Tatmadaw teams up with locals to tackle marine waste crisis

Myanmar's navy has partnered with coastal communities in Taninthayi Region to combat marine pollution threatening the Myeik Archipelago's tourism industry and ocean ecosystems. Military personnel are collaborating with the Salon ethnic group, resort operators, and village residents to remove debris washing ashore on resort islands, particularly during winter months when easterly winds carry refuse from urban areas and fishing vessels.

U Aung Zin Latt, general manager of Wah Ale Island Resort, noted that Lampi Marine National Park's Environmental Conservation Department coordinates cleanup operations alongside military units. U Khin Maung Lwin, park ranger, explained that monthly waste removal efforts target ports and beaches to prevent garbage from drifting between Kawthoung and Kyunsu. Authorities have prohibited illegal ocean dumping by fishing boats while promoting awareness campaigns designed to protect marine wildlife and support regional ecotourism development.
