The great American farm is dead, bankruptcies surpass 2024 total

Agricultural producers across the United States filed 259 Chapter 12 bankruptcy petitions during the first quarter of 2025. These filings surpassed the total number recorded throughout the entire previous year. The University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture compiled this data, revealing the highest quarterly bankruptcy rate since 2021. Ryan Loy, an extension economist with the university, identified warning signs that mirror those observed before the agricultural crises of 2018 and 2019. The accelerated pace of financial distress among farming operations suggests persistent economic challenges ahead.

Chapter 12 bankruptcy proceedings enable agricultural businesses to reorganize their debts rather than pursue complete liquidation through Chapter 7 filings. Farmers typically choose this restructuring option when they believe their operations can recover with modified payment terms. The surge in early-year bankruptcy filings indicates that financial pressures will likely persist throughout 2025. Legal experts view this trend as a harbinger of widespread agricultural economic instability. The timing of these filings demonstrates that farming operations cannot sustain current financial burdens.

Commodity prices have declined while production expenses remain elevated, creating an unsustainable cost structure for agricultural producers. Seeds, fertilizers, fuel, and pest control products continue commanding premium prices despite reduced crop values. This economic squeeze forces farmers to invest more resources while receiving diminished returns on their harvests. The disparity between input costs and commodity revenues has reached critical levels for many operations. Agricultural economists warn that this fundamental imbalance threatens the viability of numerous farming enterprises across multiple regions.
