Trade Fair Blackout Leaves VP Chiwenga in Dark

Power failed right as Vice President Chiwenga prepared to speak at a trade fair business meeting on Wednesday. The room went dark for about 15 minutes, forcing him to wait in his seat. Electricity came on briefly after five minutes but cut out again until backup generators started working.

Trade Minister Ndlovu apologized to everyone at the event, especially foreign visitors. Trade fair chairman Moyo later explained that they faced an unexpected fault on the main power line. He mentioned that their backup generator had also broken down that morning. His team plans to add solar panels to all exhibition halls soon as part of making their facility more modern.

Chiwenga never mentioned the blackout during his talk after power returned. Most Zimbabweans deal with electricity cuts lasting eight hours daily because water levels remain low at Kariba Dam. Machine problems at Hwange Power Station make matters worse. The trade showcase runs April 21-26 for its 65th year. Mozambican President Daniel Chapo will officially open the event Saturday.
