Trump pushes to name the new Commanders stadium after himself

White House officials have confirmed discussions about President Trump's interest in having Washington's planned football stadium bear his name, according to statements from press secretary Karoline Leavitt. The facility will enable the Commanders to relocate from suburban Maryland back to the District of Columbia by 2030.

Leavitt described the naming possibility as fitting given Trump's purported role in facilitating the stadium project, though his specific contributions remain unclear. Congress approved bipartisan legislation in December 2024, transferring 174 acres surrounding the former Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium from the National Park Service to District control under a 99-year renewable lease. President Biden signed the measure into law before Trump's inauguration in January.

The $3.7 billion development agreement grants exclusive naming rights to the stadium developers, according to documents signed by Mayor Muriel Bowser and team owner Josh Harris. Such arrangements for professional football venues typically command valuations reaching into nine figures.
