Trump's cozy call with Putin sparks Ukraine shock

A phone call between two leaders might help bring peace to Ukraine, but it will take more than just one conversation.

People have started talking about making peace. Vladimir Putin feels happy because the new American president called him on the phone. This means a lot to Putin because many countries stopped talking to him three years ago.

Putin made other countries very angry when he attacked Ukraine. Many countries told him he was wrong and made rules to stop Russia from selling things or buying things from other places. Some people even wanted to arrest Putin because they said he did bad things.

Joe Biden, who was the American president before, called Putin mean names like "murderous dictator" and stopped talking to him after Russia attacked Ukraine in 2022. Everything changed when Donald Trump became the new president. Trump wants to make friends with Putin and help end the fighting in Ukraine. He said they should visit each other's countries, and Putin asked Trump to come to Moscow. The last time an American president went to Russia was many years ago.

Putin feels important because he can talk straight to America about Ukraine without asking what Ukraine or other countries think. But we don't know if Putin will agree to make peace fairly. Last summer, Putin made a plan that said Russia should keep all the land it took from Ukraine. He also wanted Ukraine to promise never to join a group called NATO, and he wanted other countries to remove their rules about not trading with Russia.

A Russian newspaper wrote that Putin says he wants to talk about peace, but he only wants things his way. The newspaper said this is like telling someone what to do instead of making a fair deal.
