Smart brands use what we call the trust formula. This works out as: TRUST = Authority, Helpfulness, and Intimacy over Self Promotion. People trust experts who know their stuff. Staying current with new research makes customers pay attention to you. Helping others builds strong relationships in business, just like in real life. We feel close to those who assist us, even for small things.

Sharing creates closeness between people. Companies that talk with fans on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram build better bonds. Their customers trust them more. Talking about yourself hurts your online image. Nobody likes the person who brags at the bar or the girl who only talks about herself. Internet users hate this behavior just as much. People speak more freely about you online than face-to-face.

Take everything you read online with caution. Many Americans read news only from social media, which causes big problems. Fake stories, false rumors, and twisted news spread fast on these platforms. Most people lack the time to check every interesting story they find. Even smart readers struggle to find truth among cleverly mixed lies and facts.

Social media is a terrible teacher if you want honest information. These platforms feed you mostly lies sprinkled with small truths to seem real. Research topics carefully instead of believing what appears in your feed. Look deeper at comments and linked sources. Form your opinions based on facts from reliable places. Never follow anything without asking questions first.
