U.S. marks Oct 7 as Gaza ceasefire talks begin in Egypt

The United States marked the second anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks on Monday, honoring the more than 1,200 victims, including 46 Americans, in what Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the deadliest terrorist assault in Israel’s history. Rubio reaffirmed Washington’s support for Israel and efforts to secure the release of the 48 hostages still held by Hamas. The statement emphasized the administration’s 20-Point Plan aimed at ending Hamas’s control in Gaza and advancing a lasting peace in the region. Rubio also condemned the global rise in antisemitism.

The commemoration coincided with the start of Gaza ceasefire talks in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, where Israeli and Hamas delegations are discussing a potential breakthrough. The negotiations focus on a ceasefire, hostage-prisoner exchange, and Gaza’s future governance under a U.S.-supported framework. Leading the talks are Hamas figure Khalil al-Hayya and Israeli Minister Ron Dermer, both viewed as key decision-makers for their sides. As mourning ceremonies were held in Israel, the talks offered a cautious sign of diplomatic progress in a deeply fractured conflict.
