Uganda and China strengthened their partnership during talks about the upcoming Horn of Africa Peace Conference in Kampala. Foreign Affairs Minister John Mulimba met with Chinese Special Envoy Xue Bing on June 17 to discuss final plans for the July 2025 event. Both countries stressed the need for regional cooperation to solve conflicts across the Horn of Africa. The meeting highlighted China's major role in Uganda's development through infrastructure and economic projects.
China has invested more than $1.5 billion in Uganda over the past decade through various development programs. Chinese companies built the Karuma Hydropower Plant and Entebbe Expressway among other major projects. China supplies over 15 percent of Uganda's total imports and ranks as the country's biggest trading partner. The partnership covers technology transfer, health programs, and educational exchanges between the two nations.
The peace conference will be the third meeting under China's Horn of Africa initiative that started in 2022. Political leaders and civil society groups will gather to address ongoing conflicts in Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. The conference aims to create local solutions for regional security problems that affect millions of people. Uganda's leadership role in regional peace efforts earned praise from Chinese officials.
