Uganda launched new climate change rules on May 29 at the Water and Environment Ministry office. The rules help the country work with other nations to cut carbon emissions. Development groups like UNDP and the UN climate office attended the event.
Water Minister Aisha Sekindi said the government wants to fight climate change effects. She explained the new rules follow global standards and help countries sell carbon credits to raise money. Uganda signed the UN climate treaty back in 1993 and leads climate action across East Africa.
David Okurut spoke for the ministry leader and said Uganda has all the right pieces ready. The country has updated its climate plans and tracks greenhouse gases properly. Uganda also has the National Climate Change Act from 2021 and the right government offices set up.
Commissioner Margaret Athieno Mwebesa wants more carbon projects across Uganda. She said they will teach everyone about the new climate rules fairly. Uganda already cut 8.9 million tons of carbon emissions through past clean energy and forest projects.
The ministry plans to build a digital system to track carbon trades. For the moment, Uganda asked the UN to let them use the global carbon registry system.
