Uganda's police chief Abas Byakagaba has designated nine senior officers to manage security zones before the National Resistance Movement primaries and 2026 elections. The decision follows deadly violence during early primary campaigns that claimed one life in Lwemiyaga-Sembabule when suspected military personnel shot a person during incumbent MP Theodore Ssekikubo's campaign launch. Additional violent episodes occurred in Kasambya and Isingiro districts. Byakagaba visited these troubled areas to evaluate conditions directly. The new commanders will coordinate election security operations and respond rapidly to electoral disturbances. Moses Kafeero assumes control of Busoga Zone from Jinja headquarters while Stephen Tanui leads Northern Zone operations from Gulu. Patrick Lawoti manages Karamoja Zone based in Moroto and Paul Nkole commands Kyoga Zone. Godfrey Maate Bolingo oversees Central Zone from Masaka City as Moses Muluya directs Albertine Zone from Hoima. Richard Ecega takes charge of Kampala Metropolitan Zone while Hillary Kulaigye manages South Western Zone and Denis Namuhoza heads Rwenzori Zone from Fort Portal. The security zone establishment represents police preparation efforts with increased monitoring planned for regions previously experiencing political tensions. Regional commanders must supervise electoral policing while engaging community leaders to maintain peace during the electoral period. The appointments target areas where violence has already erupted during political activities. Each zone encompasses multiple policing regions to ensure comprehensive coverage. Officers will coordinate responses to potential electoral disruptions across their assigned territories.
