UPSI bus crash tragedy haunts survivors as students struggle to resume classes

Students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris who lived through last month's deadly bus accident have gotten back to their studies. Most survivors choose online learning while just three brave souls returned to the main campus at Tanjung Malim. Higher Education Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir revealed that every injured student has walked out of hospital doors alive. The final victim left Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital on July 8 after weeks of recovery. None of the crash survivors decided to put their education on hold despite the trauma.

The horrific collision happened during early morning hours on June 9 along the dangerous Gerik-Jeli stretch of road. A chartered bus packed with university students slammed into a Perodua Alza while heading back from holiday celebrations. The young passengers had spent Aidiladha break visiting family in Jertih before the nightmare journey home to Perak. Fifteen promising students lost their lives while 33 others suffered serious wounds that required extended hospital stays. The bus driver and attendant also got hurt along with everyone inside the smaller vehicle.

Campus officials worked hard to keep academic programs running for the recovering students. Online classes became the lifeline for those still healing from physical and emotional scars. The resilient survivors refused to let the tragedy derail their educational dreams and career plans.
