US leaves Kenya leaderless as diplomat Marc Dillard exits

Marc Dillard posted his farewell message on X as he prepares to leave his role as United States Chargé d'Affaires in Kenya. The departing diplomat described how the East African nation quickly became a place he considered home despite initially expecting only a country rich in promise and heritage. His tenure involved collaboration with government officials, civil society organizations, private sector leaders, and ordinary Kenyans across all regions of the country. Dillard characterized his diplomatic service as more than a professional duty, describing it as an experience of friendship, education, and meaningful relationships. He emphasized witnessing firsthand the resilience and character that define Kenya from urban centers to rural areas.

The career diplomat assumed his position after Ambassador Meg Whitman resigned in November 2024 following a two-year appointment by former President Joe Biden. Dillard previously served as Whitman's deputy before taking over leadership responsibilities. The State Department plans to assign a new ambassador to replace him. During his time leading the mission, Dillard participated in significant diplomatic engagements and met with Kenyan officials to enhance cooperation between the two nations.
