The United States will stop financing health projects in Zimbabwe after over 20 years of support. Ambassador Pamela Tremont said Washington accepted Zimbabwe’s choice not to sign the proposed bilateral health MoU, with American-backed work wrapping up at September’s close.
Across the partnership, US support covered HIV drugs, prevention medicine, condoms, family planning, and help for health workers. Tremont said HIV epidemic control passed 95%, while 97% of HIV-positive people knew their status, 98% of diagnosed patients received antiretroviral therapy, and 96% of treated patients reached viral suppression.
And Washington’s policy shift centers on shared spending with recipient governments. Officials plan to coordinate the handover with Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health and Child Care, while future engagement will lean more toward business, trade, investment, and broader economic cooperation.
