Zimbabwe Government Rebukes War Veterans' Criticism of President.
Zimbabwe's Information Minister, Dr. Jenfan Muswere, strongly disapproved of recent statements made by certain war veterans against President Mnangagwa.
The minister singled out veteran Blessed Geza for what he called "reactionary and unmerited" criticism. Muswere noted that Geza had previously supported Resolution Number 1 at the 21st National People's Conference, which backed Mnangagwa's leadership through 2030.
"These individuals are not using legal structures to discuss their grievances," Muswere said in a statement Tuesday night. He suggested Geza's criticism stemmed from losing a primary election in 2018.
The minister highlighted President Mnangagwa's support for war veterans under the Second Republic. This includes creating a dedicated ministry for veterans' affairs and establishing a war veterans' wing within the ruling Zanu PF party.
"Section 84 of Zimbabwe's Constitution requires recognition of Liberation Struggle Veterans' rights," Muswere said. These include fighters, support personnel, and political prisoners from the liberation war.
The government points to several achievements under Mnangagwa's leadership. For the first time in 40 years, war veterans received formal recognition through a standalone ministry that oversees their social and economic needs.
"This dedicated support shows the President's respect for his anti-colonial counterparts," Muswere added. He emphasized the administration's commitment to including veterans in Zimbabwe's economic development.
