Yoon Suk Yeol skips insurrection trial as Seoul court jails ex-president again

Former President Yoon Suk Yeol skipped his big court date Thursday after getting arrested just hours before. The disgraced leader sent his lawyers to make excuses at Seoul Central District Court while he sat locked up behind bars. His legal team filed paperwork explaining why their client could not show up for the tenth hearing of his blockbuster trial. Court officials had already scheduled the session but Yoon remained stuck at Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang. The same judges who issued his arrest warrant early Thursday morning were ready to hear his case.

The failed leader got busted for the second time over his botched martial law scheme from December 3rd. His first arrest happened back in January but he walked free in March after fighting the charges. Thursday's hearing went ahead with just his lawyers present while prosecutors called two former military officials to testify. The witnesses planned to spill details about the martial law plot that landed Yoon in hot water.

The court continues weighing serious charges that Yoon led an insurrection and abused his presidential powers. His lawyers face an uphill battle defending their client against the damaging allegations. The prosecution claims he illegally called only select Cabinet members to a secret meeting before declaring martial law. If judges find him guilty of insurrection, Yoon could spend life in prison or face the death penalty. The dramatic case keeps gripping South Korea as the former president fights for his freedom.
