Zanzibar officials are gunning to wipe out malaria completely by 2030, and they say cases have already dropped enough that kids and old people are way healthier than before. Salim Slim from preventive services told people at a meeting run by the Zanzibar Malaria Elimination Programme that fewer infections mean the tourism industry is doing better, and workers are more productive.
The program gets cash from the Gates Foundation and works with different sectors like hotels, water management, and city planning. Richard Silumbe, who runs the program, said they are focusing on building up district teams to crush the last problem areas in Unguja and Pemba. The government handed out over 900,000 mosquito nets to families and keeps giving them to pregnant women and little kids at clinics.
