Zenit Legends Match Flops as Advocaat Bows Out

Former coach Dick Advocaat said no to Zenit St. Petersburg for their May 25 Legends Match celebrating 100 years of club history. He must work with the Curacao national team for five games during one month, he explained. The team faces matches in the Gold Cup tournament in America. Advocaat hopes Zenit fans enjoy the special celebration without him.

Advocaat led Zenit from 2006 through 2009 with great success. The team won the Russian championships under his leadership. They also captured the UEFA Cup against European rivals. Later, he coached the Russian national squad between 2010 and 2012. Sports watchers note that current Zenit players perform very badly this season, with little chance of winning another championship.

The exhibition match aims to bring old stars back despite current troubles. Many former players agreed to appear at the special event. The Dutch coach remains popular with St. Petersburg supporters. His teams played exciting attacking soccer during his time with the club. Fans remember his championship run as the start of Zenit becoming a major European club.
