Zimbabwe and Mozambique Strengthen Historic Bond at 50th Independence Celebration

Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa traveled to Mozambique yesterday for the country's 50th Independence Day celebration. He told reporters that Zimbabwe and Mozambique share an unbreakable friendship built during their fight for freedom from colonial rule. The two nations helped each other during their liberation wars against white minority governments. Mozambican fighters died on Zimbabwean soil during the struggle for independence. Maputo served as the main political base for Zimbabwe's war effort.

Mnangagwa described the countries as twins because of their shared history. He said Mozambique provided crucial support when Zimbabwe fought against Ian Smith's government. The president explained that problems affecting one country will always impact the other nation. Frelimo party leaders gave shelter and assistance to Zimbabwean freedom fighters during the 1970s conflict. The bond between both countries remains strong after decades of cooperation.

Several African leaders joined Mnangagwa at the independence ceremony held at Maputo's renamed Independence Stadium. Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Portugal President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa attended the event. Mozambique President Daniel Chapo delivered his speech focusing on economic independence goals for his country. He promised to reduce hunger and build stronger government institutions. The ceremony honored founding President Samora Machel who declared independence from Portugal at the same location.

Mnangagwa participated at a wreath-laying ceremony before the main celebration began. Ambassador Victor Matemadanda saw him off at Maputo airport for his return flight home. Vice President Kembo Mohadi welcomed the president back at Harare airport.
