Zimbabwe Boldly Rescues Visually Impaired in SA

Zimbabwean Government Facilitates the Return of Visually Impaired Citizens from South Africa.

In a recent successful operation, the Zimbabwean government repatriated 27 visually impaired citizens from Johannesburg, South Africa, along with 10 aides and eight children. This initiative was carried out through the country's embassy in South Africa, demonstrating a commitment to supporting its citizens abroad.

The group, which included individuals with valid passports and those without travel documents, voluntarily sought assistance from the Zimbabwean consulate in Johannesburg. They expressed their desire to return home and start a new chapter in their lives. The consulate promptly responded by arranging their journey back to Zimbabwe.

Upon arrival at the Beitbridge Border Post, the team was escorted by consulate staff and received by the Department of Social Development at the government-run Reception and Support Centre. Matabeleland South provincial social development officer, Mr. Criswell Nyakudza, confirmed the successful repatriation of 45 individuals, including the visually impaired citizens and their companions.

Mr. Nyakudza stated, "The group approached our embassy, seeking consular services, and the government promptly funded their repatriation. We provided them with essential support, including food, shelter, and various social services at the Beitbridge Reception and Support Centre."

He further explained the government's comprehensive approach to assisting the repatriated citizens, saying, "We are currently profiling each individual to assess their specific needs. This will enable us to integrate them into our ongoing social protection programs, such as public assistance, cash transfers, drought relief, and funding for self-income generating projects, as well as the Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM). These programs will be made available to them in their respective provinces."

Additionally, the government has arranged transportation through the Department of Social Development to ensure the group reaches their destinations within the country safely and comfortably.
