Zimbabwe cheers as Coventry becomes IOC boss

President Mnangagwa sent his congratulations to Kirsty Coventry after she became the International Olympic Committee president. The Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture Minister made history when she won the election. The voting happened on March 20, 2025, and she received 49 votes out of a total of 97 possible votes. The President expressed how this date marks an important moment for both Zimbabwe and the entire world.

With her victory, Coventry broke three records at once. She became the first person from Africa to lead the organization in its 131-year existence. She also became the first female president and the youngest individual ever selected for this position. President Mnangagwa mentioned that despite how huge this achievement seems, it comes as no surprise to Zimbabweans who have watched her career develop.

Her journey from champion athlete to sports leader impressed many people throughout the years. The President described her approach to sports as passionate and determined. He praised her for raising Zimbabwe's profile internationally. He pointed out that future generations will always remember Zimbabwe as the country that produced this groundbreaking IOC leader who shattered multiple barriers.

Coventry earned seven Olympic swimming medals during her athletic career and held world records. She later became an important figure in Zimbabwe's sports administration. Her new leadership role at the IOC brings fresh perspectives to global sports governance. Athletes, officials, and regular citizens across Zimbabwe celebrated this news. Many consider her presidency a significant step toward better inclusivity, athlete protection and increased opportunities for African nations in Olympic sports.
