Zimbabwe poultry chick exports go through the roof

Zimbabwe sends more baby chickens to other countries each year. The money from these exports grew from $1.2 million in 2020 to $2.8 million last year, showing a 139 percent increase. Prices rose 45 percent, from $47 to $69 per kilogram for chicks under 185 grams. The Zimbabwe Poultry Association chairman believes the industry will keep growing even after facing drought problems.

Last year, chicken farmers made 128 million chicks and 55 million dozen eggs despite weather challenges. The country expects to pay less for chicken feed this year because of better local harvests. Most exported chicks are parent birds for breeding purposes. Some companies have agreements to send breeding stock to partner businesses in nearby countries.

Irvine's Zimbabwe mainly exports baby chickens that will grow up to lay eggs, selling them mostly to Mozambique. They also send parent chickens to countries in Southern Africa. The company meets all local needs first before exporting extras. Only Irvine's Zimbabwe has permission to supply special Cobb 500 parent chicks to other African nations. The growing exports show Zimbabwe can feed itself and still sell to others.
