Kenya and Somalia exchanges team up, region eyes new cash
Kenya's Nairobi Securities Exchange and Somalia's National Securities Exchange just locked in a deal to link up their markets and get cross-border listings going. The partnership covers tech transfers, dual-listing setups, investor education, and Shariah-compliant products like Sukuk bonds. Both exchanges want to tap into diaspora cash and make it easier for people to trade across borders. NSES CEO Yasin Ibar said Somali entrepreneurs have been running on informal networks forever, and this formalizes the connections that already exist between the two countries. NSE's Frank Mwiti called it a move toward better regional capital flows. Somalia plans to start trading in early 2026, with sectors like telecom, banking, energy, and...
Central banks push unity drive, money talk heats up
African central bank heads met up in Yaounde to push for getting the African Monetary Institute off the ground faster, and they talked about beefing up payment systems by leaning on local and regional infrastructure. Bank of Tanzania Deputy Governor Yamungu Kayandabila showed up at the 47th AACB gathering, where governors signed off on the 2026 to 2028 work program for the Association of African Bank Supervisors. BEAC Governor Yvon Sana Bangui said climate change is hitting economies and financial systems hard, and central banks need to bake those risks into their policies and stability tools. The session was run by Bank of Mauritius Governor Priscilla Thakoor, and the whole thing wrapped up technical sessions focused on the African...
Dar traffic gets a big boost, the president signs off on funds
President Samia Suluhu Hassan just dropped 54 billion shillings to fix traffic nightmares around Dar es Salaam and the Coast regions. Works Minister Abdallah Ulega broke the news while checking out the Mbagala Rangi Tatu to Kongowe road expansion, and he told TANROADS bosses to stop letting preventable jams wreck people's daily grind. Ulega basically said managers need to quit treating road inspections like some checkbox exercise because when routes get wrecked, it means nobody bothered looking for weak spots before everything fell apart. He wants the old Morogoro road patched up ASAP since vehicles keep getting stuck on the main Chalinze highway, and having a backup route would help ease the mess.
Mikumi airstrip upgrade lifts park, tourists keep soaring
Jambo Aviation pilot Hammad Hassan says the upgraded Kikoboga Airstrip at Mikumi National Park is pulling way more planes and tourists than before. The park used to be dead during this season, but he's literally shuttling groups back and forth with only two hours between flights because people want to check out the wildlife and scenery. Hassan points out that Mikumi and Nyerere parks are blowing up since they're super close to Zanzibar, which means beach vacationers can easily add safari trips to their plans. Unity Air Zanzibar dropped off more than 35 visitors, and some Dutch brothers said they picked Mikumi based on recommendations. Chief Conservation Officer Hellen Mchaki confirmed the airstrip pulls between 8 and 15 aircraft daily...
Mbeya youth shake up farming, Cleopatra sets new pace
Cleopatra Kuniberty Limandora started making banana wine in her mom's kitchen with 300,000 shillings after getting an IT diploma from SAUTI University, but couldn't land a job. She joined the YEFFA program under AGRA, and that changed everything because it taught her that agriculture could actually be a real business with value chains and markets. Her company PATRA Agroprocessing pumps out banana crisps, potato crisps, spices, and sunflower oil that hits stores in Dar es Salaam, Morogoro, Dodoma, Iringa, and Songwe. She employs 17 young people and works directly with smallholder farmers in Mbeya, buying their stuff and teaching them better farming practices. The program basically gave young women the confidence to stop waiting around...
Mwanza maids lead training drive, rights win new respect
Twenty-five domestic workers who got certified through the Tanzania Labour College in Mbeya are running training sessions for other house workers across Mwanza. They went through a five-day program with the ILO, CHODAWU, and the government about workplace rights, safety, and basic protections. Desdelia Simon chairs the domestic workers group in Morogoro and said the training helped people get written contracts and better treatment. Doricas Juma talked about how she used to see coworkers dealing with abuse but had no idea how to report it without losing their jobs. She wants more education for employers about treating domestic workers like actual employees. Beatrise Kuloba backed that up and said bosses need to understand that house...
Simba chases record haul, fans rally for badge pride
Simba Sports Club wants to pull in 29.5 billion shillings next season, which is about 13.5 percent more than what they budgeted last time around. They only hit 24 billion because M-Bet bailed on their sponsorship deal, and the club is suing them over it. Their main sponsor bumped their contribution from 4.38 billion to 6.38 billion for transfer spending. Chairman Murtaza Mangungu told everyone that protecting the brand matters since most of their money comes from that reputation. CEO Zubeda Sakuru said finishing second in the league and making the CAF Confederation Cup final showed real progress after placing third the year before. The club is getting ready for its 90th anniversary celebrations. Deputy Minister Hamisi Mwinjuma...
Tanzania U-17s clinch AFCON spot, Kenya left trailing
Tanzania's under-17 squad locked down their spot at the Africa Cup of Nations after wrecking Kenya 3-1 in the CECAFA semi-final at Abebe Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa. Nhingo Luzelenga got things started, and Luqman Mbalasalu made it 2-0 before Kenya's Armstrong Omondi tried to mount a comeback. Soann Shabani shut that down with a late goal to seal it. The win puts Tanzania through to the regional final against either Ethiopia or Uganda, and they're already guaranteed one of three CECAFA spots at the continental tournament. Kenya can still qualify through the third-place playoff. Tanzania went undefeated in Group B with wins over Burundi, Uganda, Djibouti, and Sudan.
Livestock power surges in Tanzania, farmers cash in
Tanzania's livestock game has been leveling up hard under President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
