Stanbic IBTC backs art’s next chapter, future thinkers gather
Stanbic IBTC Pension Managers sponsored The Library installation at ART X Lagos, which just hit its tenth anniversary, with a theme about reimagining African cities. The setup was basically a quiet zone filled with books from the G.A.S. Foundation art library, curator research materials, cinema programming, and Bruce Onobrakpeya pieces. CEO Olumide Oyetan said the whole thing was meant to show how imagination connects to long-term planning and financial security, not just art. They also ran a kids tour that brought 60 students from schools in Abeokuta, Ikotun, and Makoko to check out contemporary art. The pension company has been backing the fair since it started in 2016, and they threw in a private VIP session for high-net-worth...
Lagos bets big on blue economy, climate summit sets the pace
Lagos just wrapped its 11th climate summit at the Continental Hotel, and Governor Sanwo-Olu pitched the city's coastline as a money printer if they can stop it from washing away first. The big play involves converting ocean resources into actual revenue through coastal protection projects, cleaner ferry systems, and getting private investors to drop cash on renewable energy and waste treatment facilities. The state rolled out a diagnostic report with the International Finance Corporation that maps out where the money needs to go. They're looking at around 25 trillion naira in funding needs, with most of it expected from private sources rather than government budgets. KPMG and some market specialists broke down how blended finance...
Shobanjo challenges advertising Fellows, prestige now means purpose
Dr Biodun Shobanjo basically told 45 newly minted ARCON Fellows that their fancy titles mean nothing if they're just collecting dust on a wall. The advertising legend compared the fellowship to how lawyers treat the SAN designation, saying it needs to actually stand for something real instead of just being a participation trophy for staying in the game long enough. ARCON's director general backed him up, pointing out that the 2022 Act was designed to professionalize the whole industry, and fellowship is supposed to be earned through actual contributions rather than just showing up. The newly inducted group includes people like Oladapo Ojo from DM Holdings and Akiolu Adegbola from LASAA, and they're expected to mentor younger folks...
Iruh calls for positive African stories, spotlight shifts to awards
Elvis Nduibisi Iruh, who runs The Voice News Magazine out of the Netherlands, told Nigerian media people they need to stop pushing stories that make the country look bad. He thinks the negative coverage scares off investors and makes Africa look worse than it actually is. The guy was in Lagos announcing the 2025 Voice Achievers Awards and complained that the Nigerian government basically ghosted him after he sent letters about the event back in June. The awards ceremony is happening at Eko Hotel with speakers from the Dutch Embassy and some former diplomats. The whole thing centers on changing how people view doing business in Africa by looking at the relationships between Nigeria and the Netherlands. Iruh pointed out that there are...
Alpha and Roadrunner roll out electric trikes, greener rides win
Alpha teamed up with Roadrunner to launch electric tricycles in Nigeria, and they're pitching them as a way to cut pollution while making it easier for delivery drivers to actually afford the vehicles. The companies are offering lease-to-own financing, so operators don't have to drop a huge chunk of cash upfront. Ibrahim Haruna from Alpha said the partnership was meant to fix the two main problems stopping people from switching to electric vehicles: cost and access. Clement David from Roadrunner pointed out that gas prices have been destroying driver incomes, so the electric models should help them pocket more money by slashing fuel expenses. The launch happened at events in Gwarimpa and Nyanya in Abuja, and Dapo Adesina from the...
Lafarge upgrades rural school, hope builds locally
Lafarge Africa just finished renovating a school in Agbesi, Ewekoro, Ogun State, and they went pretty hard on the upgrades. The company fixed up five classroom blocks, expanded the head teacher's office, and built new dining halls and bathrooms. They also threw in a playground and a football field for the kids. The CEO, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, said the whole thing was about making education better in communities where they operate. Professor Abayomi Arigbabu, who runs education stuff for Ogun State, showed up to the opening and praised the work, saying it matched what the state government was trying to do with school rehab projects. Lafarge also donated 2,000 math textbooks to help students prep for their exams. The students were...
FB-02 revives classic FM synth magic, vintage vibes return
Full Bucket Music just dropped FB-02, and it's basically a software recreation of that old Yamaha FB-01 synth module from the mid-80s. The thing runs on Windows and macOS through a bunch of different plugin formats, and apparently, it's built with native C++ to keep the CPU usage pretty light. The plugin mimics the original FM synthesis engine and comes loaded with the factory ROM sounds plus some extras. You can actually tweak parameters like you would on the real hardware, browse through presets, and mess with SysEx data if you're into that. The interface scales up or down depending on which version you grab, and there's support for micro-tuning through MTS-ESP if you want to get weird with alternate tunings.
BRAC carnival crowns changemakers, youth drive fresh ideas
BRAC threw their annual youth fest in Savar with over 250 kids showing off social impact projects they built from scratch. The Carnival of Change ran exhibitions and workshops where young entrepreneurs pitched everything from disability-friendly audiobooks to coconut shell charcoal startups. Three winners scored the Young Changemakers Award, plus a new fellowship program that gives them actual support instead of just clout. Professor Abdullah Abu Sayeed told everyone to chase their obsessions until they make it, and BRAC's Asif Saleh basically said Stop doomscrolling Instagram because AI is reshaping the job market faster than anyone realizes. Warfaze and Sovvota closed out the first night with live performances, while the runner-up...
Tarique’s vision gets spotlight, rainbow nation pitch stirs debate
Some Dhaka University professor just dropped an analysis about what Tarique Rahman wants to do with Bangladesh if the BNP gets power, and the whole thing went down at a policy talk hosted by a brand-new outfit called the Initiative for Policy and Politics. Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan basically argued that the acting chairman's 31-point plan could unite different groups under one national vision, and Mahdi Amin jumped in, saying Tarique has been pushing power decentralization for years before everyone else caught on. Amin pointed out that BNP floated reform ideas covering courts, elections, and government accountability way back during the 2016-2024 stretch, and the current interim setup is basically running with similar proposals...
