Uhuru blasts neglect of housing pioneers
At a memorial service on Friday, former President Uhuru Kenyatta said that many who laid the intellectual foundation for Kenya’s affordable housing program have not been acknowledged. He paid tribute to Frank Ireri, former chief executive of Housing Finance Group, who died Oct. 26 at age 63 after a battle with cancer. Ireri is credited with reshaping the mortgage market to serve lower-income earners, chairing the board of Habitat for Humanity Kenya, and serving as a nonexecutive director at Centum Real Estate. He also helped reverse losses at Kenya Pipeline Company as a board member, transforming it into a revenue contributor. Kenya’s affordable housing initiative, a key project of the Kenya Kwanza administration, seeks to expand...

Hunger and despair grip Black River
Aid agencies and the military have stepped up deliveries of food, water and medicine to Kingston’s main airport but smaller regional airfields remain only partly open. Crews are hauling supplies by truck toward Black River and other hard-hit areas, yet many highways are flooded or blocked. Officials report at least nineteen deaths in Jamaica and dozens of missing residents. In Black River, homes lie in ruins and streets are lined with debris. Some survivors search wrecked shops for bottled water and canned goods. Local leaders describe scenes of desperation as people climb into collapsed buildings to pull down what they can carry. A pharmacy was ransacked and residents say that looting reflects the absence of aid and rising hunger...

Court upholds death for killer father
The Court of Appeal in Mombasa has upheld the death sentence for Charles Mutuku Kalii, convicted of murdering his two young sons in Taita Taveta County in 2017. A three-judge panel rejected his appeal on October 24, 2025, ruling that trial evidence, including DNA, witness testimony, and the absence of forced entry, was strong enough to support the conviction. Kalii was found guilty in July 2023 by the High Court in Voi for killing eight-year-old Gabriel Mutuku and five-year-old Evanton Paul during a domestic dispute. Court records show their mother fled their home after Kalii became violent while drinking, leaving the boys behind. The next morning, the children were found dead with deep throat wounds on a blood-soaked mattress. A...

Violent protests erupted during Wednesday’s voting after the electoral commission barred Hassan’s two main opponents from running. Witnesses reported demonstrators tearing down her campaign banners, setting fire to government buildings, and clashing with police, who responded with tear gas and gunfire. The main opposition party claimed hundreds were killed in the unrest, while the United Nations human rights office cited credible reports of at least 10...
