New law to clamp down on online mischief
Zimbabwe plans new rules for social media platforms. Dr. Jenfan Muswere, Information Minister, shared this news when talking with reporters last week. The laws aim to stop fake news, hidden accounts, and actions that harm the nation. He pointed out how social media benefits people but also lets paid activists and online attackers damage national goals. Digital spaces without rules have created more nameless accounts that spread lies, according to Dr. Muswere. He talked about certain people, including past news writers, who became hired activists. These individuals push political ideas through social media without checking if the information stands true. The upcoming law wants to make sure everyone using social media faces results for...
Fraudster caught in mobile toilet scam
Last week, a court found Takudzwa Munyawarara guilty of stealing money from a restaurant boss. Munyawarara runs Exclusive Projects Private Limited. He tricked Mandy Mvukwe, who runs Garwe Restaurant, out of $48,000. She wanted to buy special portable bathrooms to rent out at events. Harare judge Munashe Chibanda gave Munyawarara an 18-month prison term. The judge cut six months off if he behaves well. The court cut another six months if he paid back all the money by April 15. He must stay behind bars for six months, no matter what. Munyawarara said he did nothing wrong during his trial. The story started last May when Mvukwe planned to start renting portable bathrooms at parties and events. She talked to Munyawarara because he said he...
Council takes it easy on street vendors
Bulawayo City Council let the government's 48-hour ultimatum pass peacefully. Deputy Mayor Edwin Ndlovu said yesterday they want to move vendors first before taking enforcement actions. He mentioned the city already started relocating vendors from self-chosen spots to official vending areas before the government made its demand. They planned to move vendors to places like Bakta's and Egodini. "We're finishing up the process of moving vendors from 5th Avenue and other town locations to alternative spaces we picked out. This helps everyone switch to legal trading more easily," Ndlovu explained. The council will team up with the Zimbabwe Republic Police for enforcement after completing the relocations. "We'll monitor things around the...
Zim cops nab drug boss after botched search
Zimbabwe Military Police nabbed a wanted international drug baron Tuesday in Harare. This arrest came just days after the regular police gave up looking for him. Sources told The Mirror that Military Police found Ali Allan Mamudu, 55, right at his house on Kairezi Street, Marimba. They also caught his suspected accomplice, Khumbo Njima, from Malawi almost at the same moment. Police nearly caught Mamudu earlier in Masvingo. He escaped Sunday morning after officers allegedly discovered him with 175kg of marijuana valued at $22,000. The drug shipment traveled from Eswatini through Beitbridge Border Post, heading toward Malawi. Both men appeared before the court Wednesday after Military Police turned them over to regular police. State...
Antech Lab opens in Bulawayo for mining tests
Antech finally opened its top-notch laboratory in Bulawayo last week. The ceremony went perfectly, and many speakers praised the company. This mining lab business has made quite a name for itself across Zimbabwe. It stands out from other companies because it offers the best testing services with proper accreditation. Before this new location opened, mines around Matabeleland had to ship their samples all the way to Kwekwe. This caused big delays and cost extra money just to transport rocks for testing. Many people working in mining felt happy about Antech coming to Bulawayo. The lab will serve companies across Bulawayo Province, plus Matabeleland North and South. Edson Luwobo runs the laboratory and talks about making things easier...
Bulawayo trims senior parking hours for a cash boost
Senior citizens in Bulawayo face cuts to their free parking time. The city changed the benefit from 25 hours down to just 10 hours each month. Officials made this decision after losing $119,000 last year through the program. The city announced these changes recently. Back in June, Tendy Three Investments partnered with Bulawayo to give free parking passes for people aged 70 and older. The city wanted to thank older residents for helping build Bulawayo over the years. About 1,332 seniors signed up for their vehicles when the program started with the 25-hour monthly limit. City records showed most seniors actually used very little of their free time. Around 62 percent needed just 0-10 hours monthly, 17 percent used between 11-15 hours...
Lupane Farmers Set for a Bumper Harvest
Farmers around Lupane District feel pretty good about their next growing season. The government helped them borrow money for seeds and other supplies, which could lead to huge harvests at the Bubi-Lupane Irrigation Scheme. Everyone picked this place as a test site for a new business plan. If it works well here, 450 other water projects across Zimbabwe will copy it. Many farm groups contributed cash to these local growers. The Agricultural Finance Corporation loaned $23,000. The Food and Agriculture Organization gave free seeds and money to pay workers. The Agricultural and Rural Development Authority added fertilizer and more seeds worth $40,000. The farmers themselves contributed $10,000 worth of hard work and cash. Gerald Khumalo...
Baboon havoc at Gwanda Hospital
Baboons run wild at Gwanda Provincial Hospital these days. They break windows, leave water running everywhere, and throw trash all around the place. These animals tear up roofs and destroy the gardens meant for patients. The bold creatures walk right into hospital rooms, scaring sick people and stealing their meals. Dr. Mthandazo Mabanga runs the hospital and says baboons cause trouble throughout Gwanda town. He explained how they damage the building structure, including roof parts, rain gutters, and electrical wiring because they love climbing everywhere. The hospital staff asked Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife for help, but nobody came to fix the problem yet. Farm manager Nothando Ncube pointed out why these animals find hospitals...
