120 Asokore Mampong residents to face prosecution for skipping Sanitation Day

Approximately 120 people in Asokore Mampong Municipality will face charges after declining to take part in a mandatory community cleanup that occurred on Saturday, Nov. 1. Municipal Chief Executive Ben Abdullah Alhassan announced that legal notices will be delivered on Monday, Nov. 3, with court appearances to follow at the Asokore Mampong District Court. The accused individuals allegedly continued business operations despite assembly orders requiring commercial closures during the sanitation program.

Ghana observes National Sanitation Day each month on the first Saturday. Authorities established the program on Nov. 1, 2014, following a cholera epidemic that year to encourage neighborhood cleanliness and public health practices. Alhassan expressed frustration with residents who ignored participation requirements, stating the assembly allocates millions of cedis yearly for sanitation work because of citizen negligence. He warned that penalties would discourage similar behavior during future events.

The chief executive requested assistance from traditional authorities, faith organizations, educational institutions, commercial entities, and advocacy groups to strengthen public awareness campaigns and boost engagement. After inspecting 15 areas within municipal boundaries, Alhassan reported acceptable compliance levels in most neighborhoods. He stressed that sustained program effectiveness requires shared responsibility across all community segments.
