300K Young Women to Score Coffee Cash in Uganda

aBi Development met with coffee industry leaders at Kampala Serena Hotel on Tuesday. The company partnered with Mastercard Foundation to discuss helping young women start farming businesses. Government officials and bank representatives joined the meeting about coffee sector growth. The groups want to create jobs for women through agricultural programs. Leaders talked about reaching Uganda's coffee production targets for 2030.

The Mastercard Foundation plans to spend $50 million on the women's coffee program. Another $20 million will support future expansion over six years. The EYE-C program targets 300,000 new jobs for young female entrepreneurs. Uganda currently produces 8.2 million coffee bags each year but wants to reach 20 million bags. Coffee sales bring in nearly 23 percent of the country's export money.

Coffee supports over 12 million Ugandans across rural farming communities. Women farmers face land ownership problems that limit their business growth. Most farms never receive expert advice about improving crop yields. The meeting participants discussed better training and financing options for small farmers. Industry leaders stressed that women and youth must drive future coffee sector development.
