Thirty-six male prisoners will take Ghana's Basic Education Certificate Examination this year. The Ghana Prisons Service runs this program to help inmates rebuild their lives through school. Eighteen young offenders from the Senior Correctional Centre will join the test. Seven prisoners from Nsawam Medium Security Prison and six from Ho Central Prison will also participate. Five inmates from Kumasi Central Prison complete the group.
Chief Superintendent Adamu Abdul Latif speaks for the Ghana Prisons Service. He says certified teachers from both the prison system and Ghana Education Service have taught these students. The inmates have learned through organized classes to prepare for the exam. Armed guards will drive the prisoners to nearby test centers during exam time. Each prisoner registered at a center close to their jail.
The prison education program started back in 2007. Prison officials wanted to give inmates basic reading and writing skills. The first group of 21 young prisoners took the test in 2009. All of them passed the exam. Every group since that time has also passed completely. The program helps former prisoners find jobs and fit back into their communities after release.
