Malawi's gambling regulator publishes a full register of licensed operators, and the betPawa entry sits under a company name most players have never seen: Kuwina Limited.
That is not a technicality. If you go looking for the brand on the register, you will find it only in brackets, behind the licensed company. The same name appears in the small print at the bottom of the betting site, where it says your bets and payouts are processed by Kuwina Ltd, licensed and regulated by the Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority.
The register exists because of the Gaming and Lotteries Act of 2022, which created the Authority and swept away the law before it. Ten companies currently hold sports betting licenses in Malawi. Most players could not name three of them.
MAGLA published the current version in September 2025 and updated it in March 2026, alongside a warning that unlicensed operators are still running in Malawi and that anyone using them carries the risk personally.
The register is not a museum piece either. In June 2026, the Authority opened fresh rounds for casino and sports betting licenses, pricing the application document at two million kwacha for local bidders and 1,500 US dollars for foreign ones, with deadlines in the following month. New names can appear, and old ones can stop appearing.
Checking an operator against the register takes a minute and is the only version of the check worth anything. Logos and license numbers printed on a website prove nothing on their own. The toll-free line 4252 also takes reports of gaming operations running without a license, so the register is not the only route.
The legal weight falls on the operator rather than the station carrying the ad. Broadcasters objected loudly, arguing that losing prime-time gambling revenue would damage the sector, and the Media Institute of Southern Africa convened a roundtable in Blantyre in March 2026 to put both sides in one room. MAGLA agreed to review the feedback and announce a revised position later.
For a player, that turns advertising into a rough signal. A betting ad running beside a Saturday afternoon football broadcast sits outside the window the Authority set, whoever placed it. Not proof of anything on its own, but worth noticing.
