A first Reason Free patch makes the Rack click

Reason Free includes Europa, Scales & Chords, Pulsar, Combinator, and the rear-panel routing needed to build a moving, playable synth. Put those devices together once, and the Rack stops looking like decoration. You can hear what MIDI, audio, and control voltage each contribute, and how clearly each failure can be isolated.

Start with an empty Combinator, then create Europa inside its open device container. Europa should connect its audio output to the Combinator mixer automatically, so play the starting sound before touching any cable. Keeping that plain tone for a minute makes every later change obvious when the first modulation cable starts moving the filter.

The practical value of Reason Free’s modular starter system appears when one note can control harmony, tone movement, and space through separate devices. This patch uses no add-ons or imported samples, and it stays portable between clean Reason Free installations. It is deliberately small enough to troubleshoot by ear.

MIDI starts the patch without a cable​

Select Europa and add Scales & Chords, which attaches as a Player above the instrument. Choose a key and minor scale, switch Chords on, and set Notes to three. A single played key now produces a scale-correct triad, while an out-of-scale note is moved to the nearest allowed pitch unless Filter Notes is active.

That behavior belongs to the note stage, before Europa generates sound. MIDI from the Combinator track reaches the devices without a virtual rear-panel lead, so flipping the Rack will not reveal a missing note cable. This matters because beginners often hunt for a connection that Reason handles elsewhere.

Shape Europa while holding one low note. Use one engine, choose a bright wave, lower its filter frequency, and give the amp envelope a quick attack with a moderate release. Activate Open Chords if the triad feels cramped, since it spreads chord tones by octaves rather than adding another synth voice.

The result should be a restrained, scale-locked Europa pad, not a finished preset. Keep the filter dark enough that modulation has room to brighten it, and avoid a long release that smears every chord change. A clear before-and-after difference is more useful than instant polish.

CV gives the sound controlled movement​

Create Pulsar inside the same Combinator and set LFO 1 to a slow triangle wave. Flip the Rack, then drag its LFO 1 CV output into Europa’s first assignable modulation input. That cable carries changing control values, not notes or sound.

Flip forward and open Europa’s Modulation Bus. Choose the connected CV input as the source, Engine 1 filter frequency as the destination, and begin with a shallow positive amount. The pad should now brighten and darken smoothly while held, without retriggering its notes or changing the chord Player.

If the sweep disappears or becomes harsh, separate rate from depth. Pulsar’s Rate controls how quickly the cycle repeats, while Europa’s modulation amount controls how far the filter travels. Slow the first and reduce the second until movement remains audible at both the lowest and highest notes you expect to play.

This division is the Rack’s central lesson. Scales & Chords transforms notes, Europa turns them into audio, and Pulsar changes a parameter over time through CV. Each signal has a different job, even though all three affect what reaches your speakers.

Combinator preserves the wiring that matters​

Add RV7000 MkII below Europa and confirm on the rear panel that Europa’s outputs feed the reverb inputs, with the reverb returning to the Combinator mixer. This is the audio path. Keep the wet level modest so the moving filter remains easy to judge rather than dissolving into a long tail.

Open the Combinator Editor and map one front-panel rotary to Europa’s Engine 1 filter frequency. Map a second rotary to the reverb mix, then narrow both ranges so neither control reaches an unusable extreme. You now have two performance controls without exposing the full patch to accidental edits.

When silence appears, trace one signal at a time. Confirm that the Combinator track has keyboard focus, Europa sounds with the Player bypassed, and its audio reaches the mixer before reconnecting Pulsar. A CV cable cannot replace an audio lead, and neither one carries the MIDI notes from your track.

Save the result as a Combi patch, not merely a Europa patch. Europa patches do not store CV connections, while a Combi recalls its enclosed devices, parameter settings, audio wiring, and CV wiring together. Check that the Combinator’s External Routing indicator stays dark, because connections that bypass its internal inputs and outputs will not travel with the saved Combi.
