Madhuri Dixit's cardboard doubles once fooled Aamir Khan and a friend of hers on the Prem Deewane set. Yep, the fake versions looked real enough to get people waving and chatting at them.
Dixit brought up the funny mix-up during an appearance on Kon Honar Crorepati. Filmmaker Sachin Pilgaonkar joined in with more details about how the crew had made the props look just right.
Her friend had turned up late for a visit and headed to the filming area. Meanwhile, Dixit was in her dressing room. The guest spotted a figure, went over, and began to chat. Except nobody replied. It took her a bit to see that she had been talking to cardboard.
And Aamir had a similar run-in. He was filming close by and came over to see Pilgaonkar. With the studio lights still off, he spotted what seemed to be Dixit and gave her a wave. The director had to point out that it was just a prop. Pretty funny stuff.
Those cardboard figures had a real job in the movie, though. Jackie Shroff played a guy who had split from Dixit's character but kept her images all around his home. Pilgaonkar wanted the figures to pass for a real person, even at a glance.
The crew went all in on the detail. They took Dixit's exact height, then set up a full photo session with a range of clothes and poses. That care paid off when visitors fell for the trick, and the team had a good laugh making those scenes.
Ashok Ghai produced the romantic film, with Vivek Mushran and Pooja Bhatt joining Shroff and Dixit in the cast. Laxmikant-Pyarelal handled the tunes, while Anand Bakshi wrote the lyrics.
Music fans got tracks such as Pi Pi Piya, Aise Lagi Aag Barabar, Yeh Ho Raha Hai, Mohabbat Zindabad, and Happy Birthday to You, Mr. Pedro. The movie also had a title song. Quite a throwback to an old Bollywood romance.
