Adenta Kumi Freed in Fake News Scandal

Police freed Alfred Ababio Kumi from jail after talks between security leaders and Parliament member Alexander Afenyo-Markin. The youth activist, who goes by the name Adenta Kumi, works with the New Patriotic Party. Officers arrested him on Friday for spreading fake news through social media posts and radio comments. Kumi had written a letter asking the President to stop the group investigating the Chief Justice. His supporters believe politics drove the arrest rather than real crimes.

The activist accused three Supreme Court judges of meeting secretly with a lawyer at Santoku Restaurant. Kumi claimed Justices Pwamang, Adibu-Asiedu, and Kulendi ate dinner with attorney Thaddeus Sory on May 15. He said the group talked about court cases during their meal at the Airport area location. The petition argued these meetings could damage trust during the Chief Justice's investigation. Kumi wanted the President to replace committee members because of these dinner meetings.

The case raises questions about free speech rights and court independence across Ghana. Political leaders worry about arresting people for criticizing judges and government committees. Many citizens watch how authorities handle activists who speak against powerful officials. The release came after pressure from opposition politicians who defended Kumi's right to petition leaders. Courts must balance protecting judges from false claims with allowing public criticism.
