Afghan leaders hunted for their war on women

The International Criminal Court wants to arrest two top Taliban leaders for hurting women and girls. Haibatullah Akhundzada runs the Taliban as their supreme leader. Abdul Hakim Haqqani serves as their chief justice. Both men face charges for crimes against humanity. The court says they have good reason to believe these two committed terrible acts.

The Taliban took over Afghanistan on August 15, 2021. Since that day, they have made life horrible for women and girls. The abuse continued right up to January 20, 2025. Women cannot go to school or move around freely. They lost their basic rights to speak out and practice religion.

The court says the Taliban created a system that targets women on purpose. They also went after people who tried to help women and girls. Anyone who supported women's rights became a political enemy. The Taliban treated these supporters as dangerous opponents who needed punishment.

The arrest warrants stay secret to keep witnesses safe. But the court decided to tell the public about them. They hope this news will stop more crimes from happening. The court believes making this public serves justice better.

This case represents one of the biggest moves against Taliban leadership. The court has watched Afghanistan for years. The charges fall under international law about persecution crimes. Gender-based persecution includes violence and harmful social rules that hurt specific groups.
