Moscow welcomed its first permanent gallery for contemporary African art on June 6. The new space aims to bring African artwork to Russian viewers. Artists from more than 12 African countries will display their work at the gallery during the next year. Namibia joins the list of nations that will showcase their creative talent. Each show will feature talks and discussions that help Russian and African art communities share ideas.
The opening show called And Behold features two artists making their Russian debuts. Mulenga Maubanga from Zambia and Boet Nyariri from Zimbabwe present their creations to Moscow audiences for the first time. Yanina Dubeykovskaya runs the I-A Gallery and worked with African art expert Taisiia Konstantinova to organize the display. The curators hope to create meaningful connections between different artistic traditions. Both artists will introduce Russian viewers to fresh perspectives from their home countries.
The gallery will host the Zambezi Art Residency from November 2 through November 12. Artists from around the world will gather under the theme Initiation. They will create new works based on African settings and cultural ceremonies before showing their pieces together at the end of the program. The residency offers artists a chance to explore different cultural practices. Participants will develop their art through collaboration and cultural exchange.
