African scholars advocated for enhanced ethical governance of artificial intelligence and broader knowledge-sharing practices during a regional research symposium held in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. The gathering brought together officials from 24 science funding organizations across sub-Saharan nations ahead of next year's international council meeting in Thailand.
Professor Obert Jiri, permanent secretary for Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, emphasized that conventional methods cannot adequately resolve climate-related droughts, water shortages and agricultural transformation needs. He urged democratization of scientific data access while incorporating indigenous wisdom and ensuring communities participate directly in developing solutions rather than receiving predetermined approaches.
Air Commodore Dr. Edger Kamusoko, who chairs the Research Council of Zimbabwe board, described AI as central to economic advancement but stressed that regulatory safeguards remain essential for African benefit. Tanzania's Commission for Science and Technology Director General Dr. Amos Nungu noted the conference allowed participating councils to align positions before the Thailand summit.
