Ahmad Zahid calls for collective action to improve road safety

Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called for unified action across government ministries, agencies, industries and communities to improve road safety nationwide. Speaking at the Road Safety Congress 2025 during the Transport Expo Asia, the Cabinet Committee on Road Safety and Congestion chairman stressed that reducing traffic deaths requires coordination and collective responsibility rather than relying on a single ministry. Transport Minister Anthony Loke and Inspector-General of Police Mohd Khalid Ismail attended the event.

Ahmad Zahid outlined priorities under the Road Safety Plan 2022-2030, which targets a 50 percent reduction in fatalities by decade's end. Planned measures include mandatory speed limiters and functional seatbelts for heavy vehicles, telematic monitoring systems, enhanced driver training standards, improved pedestrian zones near schools, and stricter enforcement against speeding and overloading. He emphasized that achieving these goals demands cultural transformation alongside infrastructure improvements and law enforcement.

The deputy prime minister highlighted education as essential, advocating for technology-driven approaches using augmented reality, gaming and artificial intelligence to engage younger Malaysians. He proposed student safety clubs, digital ambassador programs and influencer partnerships to promote responsible road behavior across generations.
