Ahmad Zahid hits back at critics belittling his New Zealand trip and bilateral talks

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi defended his recent New Zealand trip against domestic critics. He argued that detractors failed to recognize the value of international cooperation and knowledge exchange. The five-day mission focused on strengthening Malaysia's relationship with the Pacific nation. Ahmad Zahid emphasized that political cynicism should not overshadow diplomatic progress. He expressed particular disappointment with religious figures who questioned his efforts without proper consideration.

The visit produced meetings with senior New Zealand officials across multiple government departments. Ahmad Zahid discussed education partnerships, halal industry development, and disaster preparedness strategies with his counterparts. Trade discussions highlighted the strong economic relationship between the two countries. Agricultural cooperation and indigenous community empowerment through Maori engagement also featured prominently. The Deputy Prime Minister met with David Seymour, Tama Potaka, Todd McClay, and Shane Reti during his stay.

Malaysia ranks as New Zealand's second-largest ASEAN trading partner, with bilateral trade worth RM10.72 billion in 2022. Ahmad Zahid positioned the visit as part of Malaysia's broader Asia-Pacific diplomatic strategy.
