Alamgir helps Japan's Sanwa take crude oil from locals

A Japanese rice bran oil manufacturer plans to source crude oil from Bangladesh to address supply shortages in its domestic market. Sanwa Yushi Company Limited announced the initiative on Monday at a Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry meeting in Dhaka.

Managing Director Yozaimon Yamaguchi said rice bran oil represents 30 to 40 percent of Japan's edible oil consumption, but domestic production falls short of demand. Secretary General Md Alamgir welcomed Japanese investment in the sector and assured institutional backing for operations in Bangladesh.

Local producers warned that crude oil exports might deplete raw materials for domestic refineries, and suggested that Bangladesh export refined products alongside crude supplies. Representatives noted the country's substantial rice production provides ample raw materials for expanded oil manufacturing.
