Authorities arrested Alefa Katema, age 38, on charges related to her teenage son's death in Balaka District. Tony Chiutira, 15, sustained fatal head trauma when his mother struck him with a brick fragment during a domestic altercation at Kankao Village on September 16. The boy attempted to mediate between his quarreling parents when Katema became enraged and accused him of favoring his father. Medical staff transported the injured youth to Balaka District Hospital after initial treatment at Kankao Health Centre.
Hospital personnel confirmed that Chiutira died from severe cranial injuries on September 24 following eight days of medical care. Postmortem examination revealed that a fractured skull caused the teenager's death. Inspector Gladson M'bumpha stated that Katema faces murder prosecution for the fatal assault.
