Alieu Badara's Balafon album reignites Gambian roots with global GamAfro sound

Gambian artist Alieu Badara releases his five-track collection titled Balafon, marking a significant departure from his established Mbalax sound. The musician combines traditional West African instruments with contemporary beats to create GamAfro, his innovative musical style. He incorporates the Balafon, Halam, Kora, Dimbeh, Riti, Bukara-Buk, and calabash into modern compositions that appeal to diverse audiences. The artist expressed concern that younger generations lack familiarity with these heritage instruments. His project aims to preserve Gambian culture while achieving international recognition.

The album features tracks titled Be Positive, Tamalaa, Believe, Impact Foundation, and Giko, which have garnered global attention. Alieu performed at the Africa-U.S. Summit in Luanda, Angola, where critics praised his presentation of the GamAfro sound. The project demonstrates how artists can merge traditional elements with innovation successfully. Streaming platforms make the album accessible to domestic and international listeners. His work carries authentic Gambian musical traditions to worldwide audiences.
