Alma Pak blueberries recalled in North Carolina over deadly Listeria

Alma Pak International pulled thousands of pounds of organic blueberries from stores this summer. The company removed 400 boxes containing about 12,000 pounds of fruit after finding possible Listeria contamination. Health officials upgraded the recall to Class I status on July 1. This classification means the blueberries could cause serious health problems or death. The dangerous bacteria turned what seemed like a routine recall into a major health scare.

The contaminated blueberries came packed in 30-pound containers with two specific lot numbers. Workers shipped all the affected fruit to just one customer located in North Carolina. Company officials say they caught the problem before any contaminated berries reached grocery stores. The quick response prevented shoppers from buying the dangerous fruit. Recovery teams collected every single contaminated box before it hit retail shelves.

Listeria bacteria can make people extremely sick or even kill them. Pregnant women, elderly people, babies, and those with weak immune systems face the highest danger. The infection causes fever, muscle aches, and mental confusion in victims. Severe cases can lead to brain infections or cause pregnant women to lose their babies. Fortunately, no one has reported getting sick from these particular blueberries.

Alma Pak International promises to improve their safety procedures after this frightening incident. The company claims they already had strong food safety systems in place. Management added extra safety steps to prevent future contamination problems. Officials want to make sure this dangerous situation never happens again. The recall serves as a reminder that even healthy foods can become deadly.
