Recall Issued for Organic Blueberries Due to Listeria Risk

A Georgia company has yanked thousands of pounds of organic blueberries from stores after finding dangerous bacteria. Alma Pak International discovered listeria germs during regular safety checks on their fruit. The company voluntarily pulled 400 large boxes from shelves. Each box held 30 pounds of the contaminated berries. Food safety officials confirmed the positive test results.

The recall started during June but became much more serious on July 1st. Federal authorities labeled this a Class I recall because people could die from eating the fruit. The government uses this highest warning level when products pose extreme danger. All the tainted berries went to one buyer located in North Carolina. Shoppers need to look for lot numbers 13325 G1060 and 13325 G1096 on any packages they bought.

Listeria bacteria can kill people or make them extremely sick. Healthy adults usually recover within days without medical help. Pregnant women face the biggest danger because the germs can harm their unborn babies. Elderly people and those with weak immune systems also risk death from this infection. Young children can develop life threatening complications from eating contaminated food.

People who eat the bad berries might develop fever and muscle pain. Many victims feel tired and experience symptoms similar to having the flu. The Cleveland Clinic tells anyone with these warning signs to see a doctor right away. Listeria ranks as the third deadliest food poisoning cause across America. The Centers for Disease Control tracks these infections nationwide.
