Amnesty tells South Africa to act on Gaza at G20

Amnesty International has called on South Africa to leverage its position at the G20 Leaders Summit in Johannesburg to pressure Israeli authorities into halting what the organization describes as genocide and humanitarian violations in Gaza. The human rights group emphasized that South Africa should exercise its influence to ensure compliance with international and humanitarian law principles.

The organization criticized Western nations for undermining international justice mechanisms, particularly referencing American sanctions targeting the International Criminal Court. Amnesty International highlighted that the Rome Statute and Genocide Convention impose legal obligations on state parties to prevent and prosecute mass atrocities without requiring prior court determinations.

A United Nations commission previously determined that Israeli authorities committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and failed in their prevention and punishment responsibilities. Palestine's accession to the Rome Statute grants the ICC jurisdiction over Gaza despite Israel not being a party to the treaty.
