Apple Fitness+ sweats to the beat, licenses music for India launch

Apple Fitness+ is launching in India through a new licensing deal. The agreement is between the Indian Performing Rights Society, or IPRS, and the UK's PRS for Music. This setup lets the workout service operate legally there while handling songwriter and publisher royalties. Sami Valkonen from PRS called it a blueprint for cross-border licensing. IPRS CEO Rakesh Nigam also highlighted their goal to get creators paid fairly as digital services expand.

The partnership is designed to make royalty payments faster and cut out extra currency exchanges. PRS will use its cloud systems to match the music played in workouts with the correct songwriters, then distribute the money. The service itself relies heavily on tracks from major artists during its workout and meditation content. It will cost Indian users a promotional rate after a free month.

This move is part of the service's global expansion, now reaching nearly fifty countries. Apple executives stated that the integration with Apple devices provides motivation for healthier living. The company also indicated that a future launch in Japan is planned.
