Apple may tap Intel 14A for next-gen chips as dual sourcing with TSMC gains traction

Apple explores dual-sourcing strategies for 1.4nm chip production through potential partnerships with Intel. GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu reports that both Apple and NVIDIA have received early versions of Intel's 14A process development kit for evaluation. The technology represents Intel's second-generation RibbonFET and PowerDirect advances built upon PowerVia foundations from the 18A process. Intel targets artificial intelligence and edge computing applications with this manufacturing node. Several major customers express interest in producing test chips using the advanced process.

TSMC currently dominates semiconductor manufacturing supply chains across major technology companies. Apple may seek manufacturing diversification to reduce dependency on Taiwan-based production facilities. Intel's 14A process competes directly against TSMC's A14 technology scheduled for 2028 market entry. Both manufacturing solutions target similar timeframes for commercial availability. NVIDIA continues evaluating Intel Foundry services amid growing artificial intelligence hardware demands requiring multiple production sources.
