Zimbabwe held a special army ceremony yesterday, during which Lieutenant-General Emmanuel Matatu received his new rank badges. President Mnangagwa had promoted him from Major-General just a day earlier. The army held this event right after naming Matatu the new leader of all Zimbabwe's ground forces.
President Mnangagwa picked Matatu based on his powers under the country's laws. These rules let him reward excellent service by promoting officers. The army boss, General Philip Valerio Sibanda, first suggested Matatu deserved this higher position. Defense Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri agreed with his choice.
General Sibanda pinned the new badges on Matatu himself during the event. He told Matatu that running an army comes with huge duties. "Commanding men is not a walk in the park," Sibanda warned him. He asked Matatu to stay firm but fair with sthe oldiers under his command to keep the army strong.

Matatu mentioned he faces big challenges but will try to live up to the great leaders who came before him. The army plans another ceremony where former leader Lieutenant-General Sanyatwe will officially hand over command. Sanyatwe has left the army to become the new Sports Minister.
