50 and winning as Tumusiime wins Pearl Africa golf series

They say age means nothing. Michael Tumusiime proved this at Entebbe Golf Club when he beat much younger players. At 50 years old, he scored 73 on the par-71 course. He defeated Elton Thembo, Samuel Bazaale, and Uganda Open champion Joseph Reagan Akena to win the second Pearl of Africa Golf Series. Thembo played poorly during the final day of the three-day event.

The match changed during holes 13 through 16. Tumusiime gained five strokes as Thembo fell apart. Pressure clearly affected the younger player. Thembo made bad choices on the back nine holes that cost him the win. After his victory, Tumusiime spoke humbly about his success.

He called first-place wins special treats. He felt happy to finally achieve this win and hopes many more victories will come his way. Tumusiime works harder than most amateur golfers in Uganda. He trains with a set plan that helps him stay among the best players even when he faces opponents young enough to be his kids.

Tumusiime took home 1.7 million Ugandan shillings for his win. The rest of the 5 million shilling prize money went to Thembo, Akena, Kasozi, and Kambale based on their ranks. Tumusiime became the second amateur winner of the POA Golf Series. John Musiimenta won the first event at Uganda Golf Club but missed this tournament because of school duties.

Herman Deco Mutebi leads the pros by two strokes as they enter the final day. Rodell Gaita Tadeo lost his lead with double bogeys on holes 17 and 18. Gaita still has a chance, along with Abraham Ainamani, David Kamulindwa, and Silver Opio. These three players sit just three shots behind the leader. Silver Opio and Opio Onito shot the best scores of the day at 69.

Herman Mutaawe struggled through a tough day. He scored nine over par with 80 total strokes. His problems started right away with a quadruple bogey on the first hole. Mutebi faces a mental challenge as he plays against golfers who handle pressure better than him. The event also includes separate contests for men, women, and junior players, who will compete on the tenth hole against the pros.
