ASRock Boards Are Killing Ryzen 9000 CPUs

ASRock motherboards have damaged more than 200 AMD Ryzen 9000 processors. Expensive chips, such as the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, have failed after months of use. Tech Yes City experienced this problem and investigated the cause. ASRock engineers explained the issue during a computer trade show. The problem affects mid-range and high-end motherboard models.

The damage comes from power settings that push processors beyond safe limits. ASRock motherboards automatically set EDC and TDC values higher than AMD recommends. These settings control the amount of electricity that flows through the processor. Higher power limits stress the processor and cause permanent damage. Good cooling systems exacerbate the problem by allowing processors to run at excessive power levels for longer periods.

AMD shares responsibility for the failures. Ryzen Master software automatically activates boost mode when the program is opened. Users cannot disable this feature through motherboard settings. They must manually turn off boost mode inside the software itself. ASRock recommends updating the motherboard firmware to resolve the power limit issue. Neither company has released an official statement about the widespread processor failures.
