Australia, Papua New Guinea sign historic Pukpuk defense pact

Australia and Papua New Guinea have signed their first defense agreement in over 70 years, aiming to strengthen security ties and limit China’s influence in the Pacific. The Pukpuk defense treaty, approved last week by Papua New Guinea’s cabinet, commits both countries to assist each other in the event of an attack.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the agreement as historic and emphasized its role in safeguarding regional security. The treaty also permits up to 10,000 Papua New Guineans to serve with the Australian Defence Force through dual arrangements.

Both countries have agreed not to enter into any agreements that would conflict with the treaty’s implementation. Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape stated the treaty reflects shared geography and history, while maintaining diplomatic relations with China and other nations.
