Azerbaijan Snares 19 Tons of Gold in Q1

Azerbaijan bought nearly 19,000 kilograms of gold valued at $1.7 billion from January through March 2025. Russia sold the most gold to Azerbaijan, with 4,416 kilograms worth $403 million. Other major sellers included Australia, Britain, Mexico, and Canada during this three-month period. Zimbabwe sent gold to Azerbaijan for the first time since 2011, selling just over 12 kilograms worth $1.1 million. Romania also became a new gold supplier with a small shipment of 13 kilograms.

The country imported this special type of gold from 18 different nations, according to government statistics. Azerbaijan greatly increased gold purchases compared to previous years. From 2020 through 2023, the nation bought only 1,724 kilograms worth $98 million total. Last year marked a dramatic change when Azerbaijan purchased over 41,000 kilograms worth $3.3 billion. Switzerland remained the only buyer of Azerbaijani gold during early 2025. The Swiss purchased 1,014 kilograms worth $65 million, which almost tripled the amount from last year.
